Herb safety

Bring us a list

Herbs are active, and some change how a medicine works. Before we write a formula, we go through everything you take.

What to put on the list

  • Prescription medicines, with the dose
  • Over-the-counter products, vitamins and supplements
  • Other herbs, teas and remedies, including ones from home or from a relative
  • Allergies, and any surgery coming up
  • Pregnancy, or plans for it, and nursing

Bring the bottles if you can, or a photo of each label. We keep the list in your record and update it at every visit.

Questions

Herbs and your medicines

Can I take herbs with my prescription medicines?

Often, but not always. Some herbs change how a medicine is absorbed or how long it lasts, so we go through your list before we write a formula. Ask your own prescriber too, and tell them you are taking herbs.

Do I have to stop a medicine to take herbs?

No. Keep taking what your prescriber has given you. We do not change your prescriptions, and a formula is never a reason to stop one.

What if I take a blood thinner?

Tell us first. A few herbs can raise the chance of bleeding, and we choose a formula with that in mind or leave herbs out.

Are herbs safe in pregnancy or while nursing?

Many are not. If you are pregnant, might be, or are nursing, tell us before anything is written, and check with your obstetric provider as well.

What should I watch for after I start a formula?

A rash, swelling, trouble breathing, vomiting, loose stools that do not settle or an unusual tiredness. Stop the formula and call us the same day. In an emergency, call 911.

Where do the herbs come from?

From suppliers we choose and check, packed in the pharmacy. Ask to see any herb in your formula, and ask about its source.
